YA LIU

While on the Cary Town Council, Ya Liu was being investigated by the North Carolina Bar which resulted in a two-year suspension of her law license that was stayed for three years. The State Bar began investigating Liu after she wrote a bad check against one of her trust accounts, leading to an overdraft. The following audit found that Liu had a pattern of over-disbursing, without keeping appropriate records or performing reconciliations on the accounts. Liu responded to a letter from the State Bar acknowledging her mistakes, and giving assurances that she would amend her practices; however, just months later, the State Bar received a complaint from one of her clients regarding continued trust account mismanagement. The disciplinary panel found that Liu's "failure to properly maintain, manage, and handle entrusted funds betrays a vital trust clients and the public place in attorneys and the legal profession".
